Sara here! We fell in love with this family once we read John’s blog on the Next Family. It tells the story of how John and Alen came to be and their journey into fatherhood through adoption and surrogacy. His blog is amusing and also very heartfelt. Please check out the Next Family website and John’s Next Family blog. We had to postpone and reschedule this shoot due to sickness and weather at least three times. The day came when we were finally going to shoot and we were very excited. As we traveled through the hills on our way to Malibu we saw a heavy blanket of fog rolling in. We were a little nervous but the fog turned out to be pretty awesome. John, Alen, Devin, and Dylan were very open and comfortable in front of the camera due to having their story documented in a short film by Jeff Haig and Melissa Leu. You can read more about the documentary at A Family Portrait. We had a great time watching these four interact. John and Alen do a good job of keeping up with their two small boys and are great dads!
